The sector develops intense activity along the traditional music bands of Ouro Preto, supporting them in preserving and organizing their collections. Since 2002, this work culminates in a festival held annually. In this way, through the department of Musicology, the Museum develops an effective action for social integration adding this sector being responsible for the custody of musical memory.
Seminars began in 2008 in order to foster discussion about issues that contributed to the improvement of action of the sector. In its first edition, the Seminar of Music of Museu da Inconfidência the theme was "Music Bands in Brazil." In 2009, it brought together researchers from across the country to make exchange program of federal institutions connected to the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, in possession of documents and musical instruments.
